What ingredients do you need for this salsa recipe?
Everyone makes salsa a little differently, for us we kept it pretty traditional, but we did mix it up with an optional different pepper.
- Tomatoes. We used roma tomatoes, but you can use whatever kind you like or have access to.
- Cilantro
- Jalapeno
- White Onion
- Green Bell Pepper
- Garlic Cloves
- Optional: Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce. This ingredient is optional, but we personally love the smokey heat that these bring to our salsa. So many come in a can that we just freeze leftovers and add to recipes as we see fit.
- Cumin
- Sugar. This is an ingredient you can skip if you have some nice home or locally grown tomatoes that already have a great balance of sweetness.
- Lime Juice
- Salt
How to make salsa?
We like our salsa chunky, because of this we just chop our ingredients up the old fashion way with a knife. If you like the restaurant-style of salsa then you can stick all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse a few times until you reach a consistency you like.
- Start by coring your tomatoes. Remove the seeds so you’re just left with the tomato flesh. Then you’ll want to chop your tomatoes into small pieces. Once chopped to your desired size add to a bowl or container that you plan on storing the finished salsa in.
- Now you’ll want to chop your bell pepper, onions, jalapenos, chipotle peppers, and garlic. Adding them to your bowl as you go.
- Next, remove the stems from your cilantro and also chop into fine pieces. You’ll want your cilantro to be significantly smaller pieces than the rest of the ingredients. Add your cilantro to the bowl once chopped.
- At this point, you’ll want to add the cumin, salt, sugar, and lime juice and mixing thoroughly. Now you’ll want to adjust the spices and flavors to your taste. Sometime we will add additional garlic powder or other spices depending on our mood.
- Once the salsa is all mixed you can serve right away, or for the best results let it sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours or more. This will allow for the flavors in the salsa to truly blend together. Salsa always better on the 2nd day.
- Serve with chips or your favorite Mexican dish.
How long will homemade salsa last?
Homemade salsa will last in the fridge for approximately a week in an airtight container. You don’t want to let the salsa sit out at room temperature for too long or your the ingredients might become soggy and sad.
You can also freeze your salsa in a freezer-safe container for approximately 2 months.
